Chatroom Features / Etiquette

Postby holyschmidt » Thu Nov 19, 2009 5:24 pm

A few guidelines I'd thought I'd outline, so everyone is on the same page when using the chatroom.

  • Be Respectful: Our Chatroom is open to anyone that comes to our forum. We have several forum members who are not part of Beta Warriors that like to hang out there, and that is perfectly acceptable. As long as they are not being a nuisance themselves, please refrain from flaming/abusive comments.
  • Private Rooms: All DLR/THORN/SNES members have the ability to enter the "Command Center" channel. This channel is private to those three alliances, so guests and other users cannot come in. This is a great place to plan attacks, especially if there are members in the Public room that you do not know. Of course, sending whispers is also an option, but this only works if there are two people discussing plans.
  • Nicknames: Please do not abuse the ability to change your nick inside the chatroom. This feature should be used constructively, and (if used) on a temporary basis. There is no way for the rest of us to know who you are, if you change your nick to something completely different.

If there are any questions about the chatroom (some feature, something you don't understand, something you see someone else do that you're unsure of, etc), please do so here.

I have made a small modification to the chatroom, in how the timestamps are shown. It used to be that this time was localized for each user.

The chatroom will now display the Ikariam time that message was written.

My hope is that this will allow for easier coordination and planning.

New Private Channels Added!

Postby holyschmidt » Sat Dec 12, 2009 12:47 am

Each Beta Warriors Alliance now will see their own private-alliance channel in the drop-down list (see below). This is unique to each alliance, and only those members will have direct access to it. Please use for alliance coordination, and private discussions (if private messaging is not possible).

I completed another MOD to the chatroom today that should help with security (a little, at least).

Guests no longer have the ability to see who is online. When they come into the forum, they will only be able to see other guests that are in the chatroom, as well as regularly-registered users (non-DLR/THORN/SNES/SPEAR).

I would advise against upgrading to v3.6 of FireFox. This version causes a strange error from time to time in the chatroom (Error: Invalid DOM Syntax (DOM ID: chatList). I will work on a solution and post here when I have a fix.

In the meantime, I suggest remaining on version 3.5.x of FireFox.

This is just a reminder that when you use the chatroom or forum at betawarriors.com that messages that could be considered offensive, or unsafe for work, should be avoided. This obviously includes all pornographic images and/or links.

Abuse of this area could lead to a ban, or even a shutdown of the chatroom completely.

Sincerely,
Betawarriors Administration

I believe I have found and fixed this issue. It requires updating to the newest CR Converter (Version: 2.8.1). If anyone continues to see this error after updating, please let me know.
